Nicole Kidman walked the Academy Awards red carpet this year in a blush-coloured beaded Armani gown, which she paired perfectly with a polished up-do.
While fullness lends glamour to this style, it’s also a little ‘undone’ which gives it a very wearable feel, explains award-winning hairstylist Jen Morgan of Auckland’s Morgan and Morgan salon.
Here’s her step-by-step guide for how to create Kidman’s modern look at home:
Step 1: Create fullness by giving freshly washed hair some lift. Jen recommends adding a little Redken Guts Volumising Spray Foam to the roots – its natural feel and long-lasting texture make for great volume and styling flexibility.
Step 2: Before drying your hair, add a small amount of Redken Heat Design 09 Shaping Blow-dry Gelée from mid-lengths to ends. Use a round brush for a smooth, frizz- free and full-bodied blow wave.
Step 3: Once hair is completely dry, brush it back into a low ponytail, leaving the front sections loose.
Step 4: To create a little texture to the right side of your hair, use a small curling iron on hair that’s been sprayed with a heat protector such as Redken Iron Shape Thermal Holding Spray. Loosely tuck this curled section behind your ear, and spray in place with Redken Quick Tease 15 Backcombing Lift Finishing Spray.
Step 5: Create ‘fullness’ by spraying hair with Redken Quick Tease 15 Backcombing Lift Finishing Spray – it boosts body and creates lift – perfect for clean hair that needs a bit more ‘grip’.
Step 6: Split your ponytail into two sections, tie into a knot and pin in place. Lightly tease the ends and stick these back into the knot. Use fine hairpins to secure but don’t be overly concerned about getting every piece in place – this is a messy chignon, not a perfectly pulled back bun.
Step 7: Finish by finger combing through the front waves, and spray everything to hold in place.
