The Fashion Quarterly team spill the beans on what’s in their handbags for New Zealand Fashion Week 2018.
When you’re up early, out late and miraculously trying to be in four places at once all while looking stylish, there’s a series of demands – or criteria so to speak – that need to be met before making it into an editor’s handbag with only the hardest working, most versatile products making the cut.
Scroll below to discover which necessities are relied upon to ensure the FQ team survive fashion week:
Danielle Clausen, fashion editor
Chloé Roy Shoulder Bag $2,981, from Net-a-Porter
In an ideal world (one where I didn’t buy my lunch every day) the beautiful boxy Chloe ‘Roy’ would be my bag of choice, I love the black and tan paired together too.
NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer, $47, from Mecca
I can’t get enough of this concealer, hitting the sweet spot between coverage and blendability.
Sans Lip Aid, $15, from Simon James Concept Store
I’m not big on lipstick, so a hydrating balm is my go-to.
S’well Stainless Steel Drink Bottle, $79, from Everyday Needs
Because everything is easier when you’re hydrated, right?
An Organised Life Leo Zodiac notebook, $16
I tend to forget things if I don’t write them down.
Jasmin Sparrow necklace, $549
This never leaves my neck, I love how it adds a touch of polish to simple outfits.
NARS Liquid Blush, $47
I’m naturally quite pasty, so a dewy blush is a perfect afternoon pick me up.
Vans Sk8 Hi sneakers, $130
Although these won’t strictly be in my handbag, I’m a long time Vans lover – this year I’ll be pairing mine with flares.
Megan Bedford, beauty editor
YSL Tatouage Couture in 01 Rouge Tatouage, $69 from Smith & Caughey’s
The most comfortable liquid lipstick ever in a classic red. It lasts all day but feels like nothing on your lips!
Karen Walker Bonnie Bag, $495
Karen Walker has just dropped a bunch of new bags and this lipstick red one will look great with blue jeans and a white tee. Plus the long strap means I’ll have free hands for using my phone as a recorder for interviews backstage.
iPhone X, $2099 from Apple
I used to bring pad and paper but now it’s digi all the way for note taking, backstage snaps and interviews.
Hourglass Veil Retouching Fluid, $54 from Mecca
I call this little gem my 3 pm concealer because it goes on easily over the top of finished makeup to freshen up your face and make signs of fatigue (and last night’s after-party cocktails) vanish without a trace.
Shiseido Minimalist Whipped Powder Blush in Sonoya, $ 50
A whipped mouse that glides on like a powder from Shiseido’s new makeup range – I’m obsessed with this soft peachy pink shade and will touch up for a fresh-faced glow.
Narciso Eau de Parfum Rouge, $170
This is a new saucy rose and iris update of the classic Narciso scent.
Ellery Sun RX01 Sunglasses in Black, $299 from Specsavers
Here’s hoping the sun comes out this year – NZFW is notorious for downpours.
Chanel Le Volume Revolution Mascara, $65
My fave new mascara – statement lashes are a fashion week must in my book!

Terri Dunn, digital content producer
Danse Lente Phoebe Crossbody Bag, $670 from 24Sevres
While I save pennies for my dream Chloe Faye, this modern design by progressive London brand Danse Lente isn’t a bad compromise.
Joco Cup 8oz, $32.99 from Shut The Front Door
Coffee is fundamental to my performance – as is a charged battery. I was gifted my Joco keep cup for Valentines and it’s probably saved at least 30+ cups from going to landfill.
Pana Chocolate Coconut & Goji, $8.90 from Natural Things
Energy, antioxidants, healthy fats, and organic… Need I say more?
Inika Organic Mineral Foundation Powder SPF15, $69
I’m all for zero nasties in my skincare and makeup but sometimes efficacy is lost in the process. Fortunately, this Inika mineral foundation does both.
Inika Organic Vegan Lipstick, $44 from Oh Natural
Ever wondered how flight attendants look chic even after a 17+ hour long-haul flight? It comes down to a banging lippy. Therefore it’s a must to have this organic puppy accessible to lift my look when the going gets tough.
Aēsop Resurrection Rinse-Free Handwash, $10
My germaphobia started when I went to boarding school at a young age. Rather than be rude and side step hugs and handshakes, I’ll just keep this Aēsop one hit wonder on hand (see what I did there?).
iPhone 6, $999 from Apple
Alas, it’s boring but essential. And TBH, I couldn’t live without it.
Belkin Pocket Powerbank, $49 from JB Hi-Fi
Note the aforementioned can’t-live-without-phone, well my phone can’t live without charge. Enter the Belkin power bank to fuel all the uploads, Instagram stories and Facebook Lives.
Byredo Roll On Gypsy Water Fragrance, $97 from Mecca
In a similar vein to the ‘give me life lipstick’, a roll on fragrance never goes amiss to freshen up and add a ‘scents of occasion’. Oh man, I’m on fire.
A5 Daily Planner, $55 from An Organised Life
Busy = brain fade. Though I’d like to consider myself organised, it’s not without cautious planning made simple thanks to a diary that have relied on for the past two years and will continue to rely on (probably) well into my retirement.

Lucy Slight, features director
World Auckland Tote Bag in Black, $499
This has been my NZFW bag for the last two years (and my go-to plane carry-on, too!). It fits everything you could need, and possibly the kitchen sink, too.
Thin Lizzy Compact Mineral Foundation, $39.99
My number one, Holy Grail makeup product, this magical compact is the best for touch-ups and making it look like you haven’t just spent a whole day running from one side of Auckland to the other.
Go-To Pinky-Nudey Lips!, $17 from Go To Skincare
Part lip balm, part subtle hint of pink, it’s lip colour for the girl who can’t be bothered actually wearing lip colour – or looking in a mirror to apply it.
Ellery 13 glasses, $369 from Specsavers
By the end of the week when my eyes are so dry my contact lenses could pop right out of my eyeballs, I’ll be turning to these stylish specs to get me through.
GoodFor Lifetime Thermal Bottle, $39 from Oh Natural
A bottle that keeps your water ice cold all day long and helps save the planet from the burden of single-use plastic. Yass Queen. https://ohnatural.co.nz/product/goodfor-lifetime-thermal-bottles-white/
A5 Daily Planner, $55 from An Organised Life
Sleek, chic and perfect for scribbling down notes – I’d be lost without my trusty sidekick.
Misty Day Plant Potions Ashwagandha Stress & Mood Tonic, $19.90.
Ok, so this won’t actually be in my bag, but I’ll be adding it to my early morning green smoothie to put me in a good mood for the day ahead. This stuff is magical, I swear! (Gwyneth told me so).
Jurlique Rosewater Balancing Mist, $54 from Smith & Caughey’s
I keep this on my desk and spritz my mug at least three times a day to revive my makeup and make my skin look dewy and hydrated again. It’s definitely coming with me to NZFW.
Tasti Made Simple Wholefood Bars
A fulfilling snack can be hard to come by and there often isn’t time to sit down, so these bars are the business. Added bonus, they don’t contain any nasty ingredients, so you can eat as many as you like. (That’s how it works, right?)
Find out more about Lucy here.
Phoebe Watt, features editor
Stolen Girlfriends Club bag, $599
Incorrect colour scheme I know, but I would love to Slyther-in to the NZFW venue with this snakeskin dream on my arm.
Mead composition notebook, $19.95
Harriet the Spy is my stationery style muse, WBU?
Ruby scrunchie, $19
Making a deal with myself that if this little guy can keep my day-four bun together then I can keep my day-four s**t together.
Sol Sana slides, $109
If wearing stilettos all day was an Olympic sport you could hand me my gold medal already. But come Saturday evening when we have one hour to place 600 goodie bags for the sold out FQ + Miss FQ show it’s speed, not endurance, that will score me points with my team.
Karen Walker single initial gold necklaces, $829 each
Just in case you can’t figure out who I am from my monogrammed iPhone case, cardholder, clutch, makeup bag, lipstick…
Branche bars
Y’all can keep your bliss balls and your sacks of raw almonds. I’ll be over here snacking on these sticks of chocolate butter my penpal sent me from Switzerland.
Too Faced Lip Injection Extreme, $22, from Mecca
If my lips are stinging I won’t notice how much my shoes are rubbing or my head is throbbing or my Spanx are cutting off my circulation, right?
Fenty Beauty Stunna Lip Paint Longwear Fluid Lip Colour, $41, from Sephora
Never fails me, ’nuff said.
Keys feat. Taranaki Hardcore key ring, $15
So I can get into my house after the Stolen Girlfriends Club party and also so that I never forget where I came from. #b****behumble
Maison Louis Marie No.04 Bois de Balincourt perfume oil (3ml), $18
My pick of the week for its portability, and bonus — as it’s not my usual scent I’ll be able to actually smell and enjoy it from dawn till dusk.
La Mer Treatment Lotion Hydrating Sheet Mask, $205 for 6 from Mecca
Every day in between shows I’ll be back at my desk putting together the next issue of Miss FQ, and at least once I’ll be doing it in one of these.
