Nike launches its first ever ad starring a transgender athlete

Chris Mosier, the first transgender athlete to join the USA men’s Olympic team, has featured in Nike’s new commercial titled “Unlimited Courage”.

The boundary-breaking commercial was also a first time phenomenon for Nike, as it was the brand’s first advertisement featuring a transgender person.

The commercial has highlighted the obstacles 32-year-old Mosier has faced and overcome on his journey to success.

“I didn’t know if I would be competitive against men; I just did it,” Mosier said in his statement. “I’ve learned a lot about myself and also had the opportunity to further the conversation on trans inclusion in sports.”

Transgender athletes have been allowed to compete in the Olympic games since 2004, if the individual has gone through gender reassignment surgery, two years of hormone therapy and can present legal documents proving their gender transition.

However in January, the International Olympic Committee enforced new regulations for transgender athletes, after pressure from Mosier’s qualification for the World Duathlon Championship. The updated policies now allow transgender athletes to participate in the Games without needing gender reassignment surgery.

“It’s just such an amazing opportunity — and an amazing opportunity for other people to see themselves reflected in someone succeeding in sports as a trans man,” Mosier said.
