Several local designers are foraying into bridalwear, giving wedding style a unique edge. Ingrid Starnes has based her bridesmaids’ collection on some of her classic designs. “We decided to make a range in some of the special silks and fabrics we have found work well,” says Ingrid. At Miss Crabb, you can choose from your favourite style and have it made in fabrics to best suit your theme and styling. Juliette Hogan’s stunning collection of bridalwear is a staple on the New Zealand wedding scene, with key neutrals including cream, black and cool blush. Liam brings a strong fashion focus with sheer, laser-cuts and modern lace detailing across 60s-inspired mini dresses, floor-length gowns and jumpsuits.

Candy colours are taking a step back in favour of blush, aquamarine, grey, turquoise, orchid, pistachio and navy; soft yet classic shades that add a hit of colour without looking garish. Whites and creams are also having a moment and are no longer considered taboo lest they upstage the bride. Interesting necklines have become a focus – think collarbone-grazing cuts of demure sensuality. We also love layering, with slips peeking through sheer fabrics.

Define your style
The key is a flattering fit and hue for the whole bridal party. At Moochi, the bridesmaids collection is customisable. “We encourage brides to mix and match their dress styles within a complimentary colour palette to achieve the perfect fit,” says Moochi’s Kim Draper.” And if the aim of the game is a timeless look, consider a more muted colour palette that doesn’t scream bridesmaid but instead suggests a celebration.
