We asked three mothers and daughters to share their fashion essentials, shopping secrets and style obsessions. This week is a striking fashion trio – Margo Barton, Ella Barton Buchanan and Augusta Buchanan.
FQ: Tell us about your job, and your passions.
Margo: Besides leading the fashion programmes at Otago Polytechnic’s Dunedin and (as of 2017) Auckland campuses, I’m passionate about mentoring emerging designers via Id International Emerging Designer Awards and through an ongoing project called Citizen Stylist.
Ella: I’m a model, based mostly in Turkey. I studied fashion design but my other huge love is food. I hope to combine the two interests after modelling.
Augusta: I spend most of my time designing and sewing. I make hand-embroidered patches and sell them on Facebook (search Feel Better Patches). I’m living in Dunedin but plan on attending fashion school in Wellington in 2017.
Augusta wears a vintage coat, tops, pants and visor, with a patch by City of Augusta Feel Better Patches and bracelets by Ella Buchanan. Ella wears a top by Vakko and skirt by Zara, with a scarf by Hermès and bag by Emilio Pucci.
How would you describe your personal style?
M: An eclectic mix of designerwear, New Zealand brands and imports, plus essential accessories, many of which are vintage. While I love being comfy and wearing my white Vans or Dr. Martens, I also adore dressing up.
E: Feminine and colourful. I like all things sparkly, fluffy and pink. I love to collect clothes from different countries and team them with vintage pieces, and designer and high street brands.
A: My style is based on colour combinations and layering. I love wearing my mint green pants, with a turquoise polo neck and a pink t-shirt.
What are your go-to brands?
M: I usually mix two or more of the following together in one outfit – Nom*D, Carlson, Company of Strangers, Maaike, Maison Margiela, Uniqlo, Glassons, and vintage of course.
E: I’m a huge Emilio Pucci fan. I also like to grab basic pieces from high street stores such as Zara and Glassons.
A: I love Emma Mulholland. The textile prints on her garments are amazing.
Margo wears a jumpsuit by Nom*D and coat by Company of Strangers, with a neckpurse by Harley Jones x Company of Strangers, sandals by Progetto, Thorberg glasses from Francis Patterson, necklace by Helen Adam and her own ring.
Would you say you influence each other’s style?
M: Yes, I now wear pink – unheard of in the old days!
A: Ella and Mum have always taught me to wear what I feel comfortable in.
