Gen Xs are!

While the stereotype might be that we spend our days photographing our food and relentlessly posting selfies to social media, it turns out Gen X are far more addicted.

A new study has shown Xs are hitting social media sites on average around 6 hours and 58 minutes a week, compared with their younger counterparts (that’s us), the Ys.

According to the study, Facebook was the most popular app on smartphones. Instagram was next, followed by Twitter, and Pinterest. Snapchat was sixth and LinkedIn seventh.

The report also looked at ‘second screen activity’ on social media. You know, like when you’re on multiple devices at once… as in binge watching Netlfix and swiping on Tinder at the same time. Guilty!

The results revealed it was Xers who, again, were most addicted. On an average day, 42 per cent of those interacting with television on Facebook were from the 35 – 49 aged group, while only 40 per cent were millennials.

The report’s author Gen Xer Sean Casey said the findings came as a surprise because “the going thought is that social is vastly owned by the younger generation.”

“It’s kind of synonymous, when you think of millennials, you think of social,” he said. “At a time when we wanted to be connected, it came out right when we were at the top of our media consumption. It’s become second nature to our generation.”

Now you’ve got a solid argument for the next person trying to bag millennials and our supposed “social media obsession”! Boom.
