Last summer, everyone went crazy for jorts. This year, get excited for something even better – micro shorts. Arguably brought about by pop diva Charli XCX’s ‘BRAT summer’, everyone is rocking these teeny-tiny bottomsfrom a-lister fashion muses like Zendaya and Hailey Bieber, to Auckland uni girls at Pici on a Thursday. But, how do we do it right?

The great thing about this trend in particular is that we are spoilt for options. Whatever your personal style or comfort-zone boundaries may be, there’s no doubt going to be something for you to try. The four main styles of the micro short to note are the coquette-esque bloomers, the ‘basically undies’ brief, classic denim daisy-dukes, or a micro bike short (for the athleisure lovers).

For a quick coffee run in the city, make a mental mood board of bloomers, knee high biker boots, a chunky belt, and a baby tee—white or graphic, anything goes. If you’re heading on a first date this weekend, add a cutesy touch with a kitten heel and opt for a set, like Glassons’ ‘Baboushka denim mini short’ with their matching ‘double bow denim blouse’.

Looking to lean into campy couture? The girls are also loving a brief, such as Miu Miu’s, with a long colourful sock and a ballerina flat. Pair that with an off-duty ballerina tie-around cardi, and you’re ready to hit the streets of NYC.

The beauty of micro shorts is that they demand the attitude to fit their boldness. They’re an edgy, effortless piece that can bring freshness to any outfit— but you have to want to rock them. Strut your stuff, channel your inner BRAT and flaunt all of your leggy goodness.

If you’ve ever needed an excuse to try something new, now’s the time. Shop our favourites below. Or, hit the op shops and find some last-season jorts to turn into your own 1-of-a-kind micros.
