Looking for a self-tanner that cares for your skin and the planet? Here's everything you need to know about PURE by Bondi Sands.

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH BONDI SANDS

When we’re curating our dream beauty routine most of us are keen to include products that reflect our lifestyle choices. We desire products that not only care for and nurture our skin but take the planet into account too. Self-tanning is no exception. However, up until recently, it’s been hard to find a self-tanning formula that not only delivers a flawless summer glow, but also ticks all the boxes as far as sustainability and clean beauty is concerned.

Enter PURE by Bondi Sands – a skin-nurturing and planet-friendly approach to self tanning. Not only is every product in the PURE range packed with skin-nourishing ingredients – such as hyaluronic acid and vitamins C and E – the new Bondi Sands range has been packaged in post-consumer recycled plastic which means every product is 100 per cent recyclable.

Fashion Quarterly caught up with Blair James, the co-founder of Bondi Sands, to find out more about sustainably minded PURE and where the brand is headed next.

Tell us about PURE and how it’s different to anything you’ve done before.

PURE is sustainable, easy to use and it features brand new application methods that are better than before. The PURE packaging is made out of a single type of plastic meaning there are no embedded metal springs in the pumps or foam heads. Because of this, you don’t need to worry about separating your materials when disposing of the product, you can simply throw them straight into the recycling and know that they will be recycled appropriately.

How are the ingredients in the PURE range unique?

We’ve taken a simple and transparent approach with PURE – on average, there are about 15 ingredients per product.  We’ve been transparent with the ingredients in each product and on back of each pack we’ve called out exactly what each ingredient does. Each ingredient really has a purpose. The range is also dermatologically tested, suitable for sensitive skin, and has no fragrance.

Why did you decide to add skincare ingredients to the PURE range?

DHA – the ingredient that creates colour in self-tanners – can be very drying on the skin, so we always try to include moisturising products to counteract this. Unfortunately, these ingredients often inhibit the DHA developing colour but with PURE, we’ve tested a lot of premium ingredients to see what would allow that golden colour to develop.

Hyaluronic acid is something we have wanted to use for a long time due to its moisturising benefits. The ingredient holds about 1000 times its weight in moisture, which is great for hydrating the skin to prolong your tan.

PURE also contains Vitamins C and E, which aim to repair and add radiance to the skin – especially your face. These aren’t just tanning products, they also double up to bolster your skincare regime.

Tell us about some of the innovative products in the PURE range such as the Face Drops and Sleep Mask.

Every product in the range is different to anything we’ve done before. We’ve changed the way the products foam with the PURE Self Tan Foaming Water. It doesn’t have a pump head like our traditional self tanning foams but rather foams when you squeeze the packaging. It relies on air trapped within the bottle to create the foam.

The PURE Self Tanning Drops are a new product for us. They allow more customisation to your self tanning routine, so you can adapt your glow to achieve your desired colour. They are designed to mix with your favourite moisturiser, so are super convenient to add to your existing skincare routine.

The PURE Self Tanning Face Mist is something completely new too. It has been made with a recycled plastic spring rather than a metal spring so the packaging is easy to recycle in a single-step process. It’s a very fine mist spray, so you only need a couple of sprays to the face and the tan will develop over the next four to five hours.

The PURE Self Tanning Sleep Mask is one of the favourite products in the Bondi Sands office. Most people are self-tanning overnight, so it allows people to tan their face in the same routine, plus you’ve got all those skin-nourishing ingredients in there as well. It’s really important to have that extra hydration if you’re leaving a tanning product on overnight so you apply this one in the same way you would with your usual moisturiser or sleep mask.

How will Bondi Sands commitment to the environment evolve in the future?

Taking responsibility for our impact on the environment is something that we have been working on for a while now at Bondi Sands. We had already started swapping out some of the plastics that we use for post-consumer plastic and we’ve begun taking out materials that aren’t recyclable where we can. PURE is our best in class range, and over the next two to three years we will look to roll this packaging technology out onto the rest of our products. The entire Bondi Sands range will be made from 100 per cent post-consumer plastics and be 100 per cent recyclable by 2025.

We’ve also been busy reviewing all of our ingredients to ensure they are all ocean friendly and not harming any marine life. We’re focused on ensuring people with sensitive skin are able to use our products and dermatologically testing where possible.

We take our position as a market leader in self tan very seriously and believe that we are operating in the same way all big skincare companies should.
