Predominantly known for her watercolours Brogan Scott has collaborated with luxury clothing brands such as Rebe and Wynn Hamlyn, and is highly sought after to create bespoke wedding stationery. In this issue FQ collaborated with the artist and are elated with the incredible results, so we wanted to find out more about her…
In conversation with Brogan Scott:
What inspired the specific themes and designs you contributed to this issue of FQ?
For this issue of FQ, I drew inspiration from the whimsical and unrestrained nature of children’s art, embracing its playful and messy qualities to create perfectly imperfect illustrations. I used a combination of watercolours, oil pastels, and gouache. I love the accessibility of these mediums, as they allow me to work quickly and easily, fitting my spontaneous approach to art.
How was your experience working with our editorial team on this project?
Working with the editorial team on this issue of FQ has been incredible. They gave me complete creative freedom with the illustrations, which made the process immensely enjoyable.
What has been the most significant influence on your artistic journey so far?
Entering the wedding industry and creating bespoke stationery for brides worldwide has been the most significant influence on my artistic journey. This experience provided me with creative freedom and gradually enabled me to work for myself.
How has your work evolved over the years?
My work has continuously evolved, encompassing multiple styles that vary with the mediums I use. Initially, I was anxious about needing to stick to one style to achieve success, but reflecting on the diverse styles and eras of many renowned artists reassured me. A major milestone in my career was establishing a solid base in Tāmaki Makaurau on Karangahape Road with my studio.
Are there any other artists or designers who have significantly impacted your style or approach?
My friend Michelle of Nouille Design has impacted my style and approach by introducing me to the world of bespoke stationery. Artists include John Pule, Marc Camille Chaimowicz, Helen Frankenthaler, and Matisse.
Do you have a favourite medium to work with, and why?
My favourite medium is watercolour. Many find it unforgiving, but I appreciate how less control over the medium can actually be an advantage. As an impatient artist who thrives on instant gratification, I love how quickly watercolour dries, allowing me to see results almost immediately.
What do you find most fulfilling about your work?
The freedom of working for myself and the flexibility to work from anywhere. This year, I’m excited to spend a month in Bali and look forward to discovering new sources of inspiration there.
What upcoming projects or collaborations are you excited about?
I’m in the process of releasing my watercolour artworks as prints and creating new original pieces. Additionally, I’ve collaborated with my dear friend Rebe Burgess of Rebe on an exciting summer essential. Keep an eye on this space; it’s something extraordinary!
