Wondering how to keep your pout looking its best over the champagne season? We asked natural lipstick queen Karen Murrell for her insider insights on summer lip trends and lip care.

While it’s no secret that no-make-up make-up is having a major moment in the beauty industry as of late, the arrival of summer means that as days grow longer and hemlines get shorter, we’re also likely to see some fresh new beauty trends cropping up too – especially for the lips.

Renowned for her luxurious line of clean, natural lipsticks, it’s fair to say that Karen Murrell is seasoned expert in the world of lip care and colour. From bold matte hues to balms and scrubs, Murrell’s extensive collection provides everything you need to keep your pout primed and pretty.

With an array of events already filling up our social calendars for the months ahead, we hear from the lipstick connoisseur to get her take on what lip trends we can expect to see for the summer season.

Q+A with Karen Murrell:

What can we expect to see in terms of lipstick trends this summer, Karen?

In addition to the bright pinks of Barbiecore being here to stay for the warmer months ahead, due to our renewed love of the 90s and early noughties I foresee a summer of neon shades popping through which will also be extended to use on the eyes.

Don’t [shy away from] complementing your lipstick with a similar shade on your eyes – we’ve seen it feature strongly on TikTok over the northern hemisphere summer and we will follow suit.

Soft pastel shades will also feature – think 16 Lavender Laughter, 14 Orchid Bloom and 15 Peony Petal adding a soft, polished, hyper feminine feel.

Will the beachy nude lip trend still reign supreme?

The beachy nude trend is set to continue this summer and always will, you cannot beat a good nude for the beach or a bbq. Think ‘your lip colour, only better’ when it comes to choosing the right nude for your skin tone. The new 30 Driven is going to be the clear winner this summer season, it suits everyone!

In terms of a lipstick wardrobe colour palette for the season ahead, what should every woman ensure she has in her lipstick wardrobe?

When I travel I only take three colours with me. One neutral nude shade as this is good for weekends and casual meetings; I go for a red or orange shade for evenings or days when I’m feeling bolder or need to feel empowered; and finally, one pink shade which I tend to wear on days to work when I’m wanting to be more fashion orientated. My suggestions are 30 Driven for a winning nude. 08 Coral Dawn for a bold red or orange shade then 17 Poppy Passion for a blast of Barbie Core inspired pink for when I’m feeling fashionable and adventurous!

How am I best to keep my lips soft and smooth this summer?

Keeping lips well exfoliated and nourished helps your lipstick application look better and
last longer. I recommend using a lip scrub (my favourite for summer is the Watermelon or
Mint Lip Scrub from the Island Goddess Collection) either in the shower or at the basin each night and then apply a generous lashing of 01 Moisture Stick to seal in hydration as loving lip ritual nightly.

How am I to get the longest wear out of my lipstick over the champagne season?

When you apply Karen Murrell natural lipstick your body heat melts the two hard waxes Candelilla and Carnauba wish is also combined with the soft beeswax. This combination infuses with our natural skin pigments and combines with special hydrating oils such as jojoba to create a fusion of colour.

Once you apply your lipstick straight from the canister and then lock your lips together the colour is fixed on to your lips.

What are your tips and tricks for making your lipstick last all night?

In addition to the above, for super long-lasting wear I suggest layering the closest matching lip pencil underneath your favourite shade. Line the edges of your lips, then colour in the lip itself with the lip pencil. Then apply your favourite shade on top of this for ultimate lipstick staying power!

What is your favourite shade that you’ll be wearing this non-stop this summer?

I love wearing 15 Peony Petal in spring and summer as it’s so fresh and gives me a little lift, and I’m also a big fan of 18 Sugar Rush this season, it’s a perfect neon inspired pink and sales forecasts for it are extremely strong.
