As we speak, Kiwi model Lili Sumner is taking New York Fashion Week by storm, walking the runway for the likes of DVF, Opening Ceremony and Jeremy Scott (just to name a few).
The Saint Laurent model and face of Marc Jacobs’ Spring 2016 campaign is undoubtedly a seasoned pro, so in the midst of NYFW, we tracked her down to get her best survival tips for juggling fashion’s most hectic (and stylish) week:
FQ: Which shows are you walking in this Fashion Week season?
Lili: I was just in Los Angeles walking for the Saint Laurent men’s show at the Hollywood Palladium. It was like going to a festival! I brought one of my sisters to the party and we danced to Joan Jett. Joan and I were somehow wearing identical outfits… Now it’s Day Four of New York Fashion Week. So far I’ve walked for DVF and Opening Ceremony and today I’ll be at Jeremy Scott. I can’t tell you about the future so you’ll have to wait and see!
What’s always in your beauty survival kit?
I love the Sukin range. My skin is absolutely drinking it up right now because the NYC winter is so dry. I use their facial moisturiser every day, and the hydrating mist is especially good whilst flying and it smells heavenly. I don’t often put on makeup myself but when I do I go crazy with mascara. I like the one Blinc makes and the brand is cruelty free which is important to me. I like doing big ridiculous spider lashes! Sukin also makes a great protein hair treatment and it’s probably what keeps my bleached hair alive.
What are your ‘model off duty’ fashion staples?
My look depends on how I’m feeling, but I have jewellery that I always wear. Hedi from Saint Laurent made me a “Lili” necklace that I adore.
Any tech essentials you can’t live without while working?
Google Maps come in very handy and I like my big headphones so I can zone out from the chaos.
What are your favourite snacks to take backstage with you?
Fresh fruit and anything I can fit in to my bag.
Do you have any hobbies that help keep you occupied backstage?
I take my notebook with me so I can draw and write stuff down. A reading book is essential too! I never leave home without one.
What songs do you currently have on repeat?
I have Ty Segal’s album Melted on constant repeat. I also just started listening to this 70s French jazz group called Cortex. Their album Troupeu Bleu helps me get up in the morning.
Tell us your best tips for getting snapped by street style photographers…
Run! (Kidding!) They’re waiting outside in the snow/ heat/ rain. Give them a smile and wear whatever makes you feel good.
