No stranger to the tabloids, this time Kylie Jenner is making headlines for something other than her personal life and fashion choices.
The 21-year-old has officially become the youngest self-made billionaire ever, taking the top spot away from Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg who achieved the milestone at age 23.
Last year, Forbes predicted the milestone in their ‘America’s Women Billionaires’ article which sparked significant controversy, with many calling into question whether Kylie’s status could really be described as “self-made”.
Many publications and individuals called out Forbes for listing the makeup mogul as a self-made billionaire, as according to the dictionary, the definition of ‘self-made’ is someone who has achieved success or prominence “by one’s own efforts”, which some believe does not accurately describe Kylie’s position.
While they acknowledge the hard work it has taken to build a successful brand, factoring in Kylie’s attachment to the famous Kardashian-Jenner family name and wealth means that she’s had a pretty good head start.
This initial fame lead to Kylie launching her makeup line Kylie Cosmetics whose “humble” beginnings started with a range of popular lip kits. Over the last few years, the brand has grown astronomically and now also produces eyeshadows, concealers and a range of other beauty products.
Since Kylie Cosmetics launched, it’s reportedly sold more than $900 million worth of makeup according to Glamour magazine. Kylie has stated her success is down to her social media following saying, “social media is an amazing platform. I have such easy access to my fans and my customers.”
Whether she is “self-made” or not, Kylie’s beauty business is definitely a success story worth reporting on. The extent to which she’s utilised her name and following to build a beauty empire is incredibly impressive – and all this while juggling being a young mum, filming KUWTK, fulfilling all her endorsement agreements and running multiple other ventures. One thing’s for certain, Kylie’s one busy and very impressive lady!
It’s true no matter where Kylie goes or what she does, the world will always be watching – and now more so than ever before.
