Kerastatse Initialiste – promises a good hair day….

It’s what we all pray for – a good hair day. Help is at hand……

Careful when hair is wet.

Hair is most fragile when it’s wet; always detangle strands in the shower with a wide-tooth comb while hair is loaded with conditioner, and then rinse. For extra strength, towel dry and apply a leave-in product, such as Kerastatse Initialiste, $70 (see below). A skin care-inspired serum, it nourishes the scalp, encouraging strong, shiny hair. To apply: run a dropper full over the head and under damp hair, massage in, and style as normal.

Use fewer suds.

Dull hair is often caused by excess shampooing, which strips away the natural lipids that makes hair glossy. Use a protein enriched shampoo such as Keratin Complex Blondeshell Shampoo, $40, to boost weak, limp locks.

Loosen up.

Tight ponytails and topknots are easy style solutions, but can be torture for the roots. Instead of pulling hair back every day, use a texture or root-boosting product – and let your natural wave do the work. We like: L’Oreal Professionnel Volumetry Root Spray, $31.

The right diet.

Collagen makes up about 60% of skin, including the skin around the hair follicle. To keep hair thick and vital boost your diet with more protein – including oily fish. Eat plenty of vegetables containing sulphur (onions, leeks, chives and garlic) which makes amino acids (protein) for hair. As far as supplements go, zinc and iron are most important, and extra silica will help boost thickness.

Brush less

Vigorous brushing can increase hair damage and breakage. If hair is tangled use a natural bristle brush as that’s the most gentle, otherwise use a brush for styling purposes only.

Cool it.

Frizz and breakage are compounded by heat from hair dryers, curling tongs and straightening irons. We accept heat-styled hair always looks better, but you can turn down the temperature. Choose an ionic hair-dryer with 3,000 plus watts, as the more blow a dryer offers, the faster it will style and the less heat it uses. Try Parlux 3800 Ceramic and Ionic, $241.

This little bottle of goodness has taken our hair from drab to fab in a matter of months, we can’t stop raving about Kerastatse Initialiste, $70.
