I’ve always prided myself on having good hair, so when the opportunity arose to try the Kérastase K-Scan at Auckland’s Sulin Hair Design, I was curious (and a little nervous) to see my hair’s true health score.

If you haven’t already heard of it, the K-scan is a game-changer in the hair industry—a small device blending luxury, technology, and science from the comfort of your salon chair. The process begins simply: filling out a quick questionnaire on an iPad about my hair type, scalp condition, and general care routine. So far, so routine. But it’s after this the innovation begins. Powered by AI, the diagnostic tool (that my hairstylist held onto my scalp) is used to capture detailed images.

The groundbreaking tool is powered by three illumination modes (UV, white and cross-polarized) which, with the help of AI, has been trained on over 12,000 images to provide an unparalleled insight into your scalp and hair health. Within seconds, I could see high-resolution images of my scalp and hair follicles on the iPad—closer than I’d ever seen before. It was eye-opening and, honestly, a bit confronting.

The results?

A 69 out of 100—not bad, but it highlighted areas needing improvement, particularly my scalp’s microbiome, which was surprisingly low in beneficial bacteria. Thankfully, Kérastase has a solution.

The recommendation:

My stylist whisked me off to the basin for a luxurious Fusio-Dose treatment to restore my hair’s shine and prescribed a personalised regimen tailored to my needs. On the list – Kérastase Symbiose Micro-Peeling Cellular for a pre-cleanse, Kérastase Genesis Bain Nutri-Fortifiant as a cleanser, and Kérastase Blond Absolu Masque for intense conditioning. I loved how the K-scan moved beyond product ranges to dip in and out of all Kerastase offerings making sure it truly was a customised prescription.

The standout recommendation, though, was the Kérastase Spécifique Potentialiste Balancing Scalp Serum, formulated with vitamin C to neutralise external aggressors and prebiotics to strengthen the scalp’s barrier. Applied directly to my scalp, it provided a refreshing, cooling sensation—a small but meaningful step toward better scalp health.

After the treatment a luxurious head massage followed, and in a short time my hair felt silky, smooth, and revitalised. The blow wave was the final touch, leaving my hair looking like it had undergone a complete transformation. Of course, I won’t just trust how my hair looks and feels. I’m looking forward to coming back in 21 days for another K-scan to get an in-depth view of how my hair has improved.
