Wellness lover, Julia Matthews shares her tips

For someone who is petrified of flying it’s something I have to do quite often. Last year I caught over 50 flights and while the flying didn’t get easier, packing my suitcase did.  I’m such a pro at packing I generally leave it to last minute (okay, that’s just me being lazy) but seriously, I can just about pack with my eyes closed.  No matter if travelling for work or play, my suitcase essentials don’t change.  Here are my non negotiable travel items…

Liquids

Staying well hydrated before a flight is essential. Dehydration can cause your body to become run down, making it easier to pick up bugs while flying.  I always make sure to have a few bottles of OVI Hydration in my hand luggage to sip on throughout the flight. I love that it has antioxidants from green tea, plus it’s a yummy addition to my flying routine which makes staying hydrated easy. The Berry flavour is my current fave.

Comfort

Flying can be an uncomfortable experience if you are not dressed in appropriate clothing.  It can get quite cold on planes so to combat this I always pack cashmere. Shoes are a no no, you don’t want to land at your destination with swollen feet! Pack socks and slippers to wear if you visit the bathroom.  You will be anything but active on your flight, however, I do recommend wearing some sort of legging or tight so you can curl yourself up and have a wee snooze (very hard to do in jeans!).

Supplements

Sleeping can be a little hard to do on a flight so taking something to help the process can only be a good thing. I love Melatonin as it’s natural – unfortunately you cannot buy this in New Zealand so if you know of anyone heading to the USA ask them to pick you some up from the chemist. Other sleeping helpers are Valerian and Passionflower.

Skin

Once I get on the plane make up comes OFF! Always always! If I am on a long haul flight I’ll even go as far as cleansing my face.  Serums are a must, a good face mist and lip balm.  My favorites are Essano Face Wipes, Aspect Cleanser, Osmosis Catalyst Serum, Go-To Face Hero, Jurlique Rosewater Balancing Mist and Karen Murrell Moisture Stick.

Hair

When travelling for work I seldom have time to do my hair so will get a blow wave when I land and then realllyyyy get my moneys worth by using dry shampoo for about 5 days. Oribe Dry Shampoo is one of my absolute favorite beauty products – smells incredible and gives major volume as well as mopping up oil.  When I eventually do wash my hair I’ll spritz Triumph & Disaster Sea Salt spray through it and let it air dry (so fun to use when on a tropical island!).  Sunscreen is a must no matter where you are and Ultraceuticals SPF30 is goodie.  Gotta keep the body moisturized and Linden Leaves Body Oil is super light and leaves the skin feeling nourished.  I’m pretty obsessed with my new Philips electric toothbrush, because it’s rose gold of course. But also, it comes in a travel case that you charge the toothbrush through with a USB charger. The ultimate travel toothbrush!

Makeup

Can’t forget make up.  I try to use only natural and/or organic brands as they are not tested on animals and are generally better for your skin as they don’t contain any synthetic ingredients. Osmosis and Inika are my two favorite brands – they work really well and are both highly pigmented so you only need to use a little bit and it goes a long way.
