Jimmy Choo might be synonymous with sex appeal, but the brand’s latest fragrance, Jimmy Choo Floral, is less splashy “life of the party” and more akin to a quiet wander through a radiant garden full of unfolding blooms.

Hence, we swapped our stilettos and picked up some secateurs to meet Liv Wakem of Auckland’s Kensal Flower Studio, who knows more than most about being surrounded by flowers full-time.

Have you always wanted to be a florist?

I’ve always had a love for flowers. My grandad grew the most beautiful sweet peas and we had wild, rambling roses climbing up the side of our house, but it wasn’t a career I had contemplated. After school, I pursued a life of dance and performing but decided, with a move to London, that it was time to indulge the passion and move into flowers.

What do you love most about working with flowers?

I love the seasonality of what I do; the flowers and colours are ever-changing. How would you describe your floral aesthetic? Wild and natural, inspired by English country gardens.

Magnolia blooms are at the heart of Jimmy Choo Floral. What makes them so special?

Magnolia flowers usher in spring with a light, citrusy scent. It’s so wonderful to see a bald tree popping with magnolia buds; it means warmer weather is coming!

How do you like to use them in your work?

I love a large old pickle jar filled with the budded branches, just on their own, so their beauty slowly unfolds and can be truly appreciated.

Sweet peas and soft, petally notes are also key in the fragrance composition. Do you have any tips for styling smaller flowers?

Dainty flowers suit bud vases perfectly. Pop some stems in a little bottle on your bedside. The trick is not to “over-vase” your flowers, especially delicate ones like sweet peas.

The scent is designed to remind of a walk in nature with flowers blooming. What’s your favourite nature escape?

A stroll through any rose garden can make time stand still. They’re such peaceful places with heady scents and enchanting colours.
