Meet the David Jones ambassador and founder of the fragrance-free line, Equal Beauty.
Earlier this year, FQ was lucky enough to cross paths with multi-talented model Jessica Gomes at the bi-annual David Jones AW18 Collections launch in Sydney. Not only is she a beaming beauty, she also counts acting and being the founder of skincare company Equal Beauty as strings to her bow.
Raised in Perth, the 33-year-old is now based in sunny LA – a lifestyle not too far from that of home she says. Although like most Instagram It-girls, there’s no shortage of globe-trotting for Gomes, recently touching down in India and New York.
We caught up with Jessica to find out what’s inspiring her right now, her approach to feeling strong and where she wants to travel to next.
Having modelled since a young age, how do you approach beauty as a whole – both inner and outer?
I’ve had to work a lot on my own self-esteem, it’s definitely been a work in progress. I think the light bulb moment was growing to realise that you really just have to be yourself, embrace who you are and not follow anyone else. Everyone has unique qualities. When I feel good inside it shows on the outside. I love my body and I love looking after myself by eating wholesome food, exercising and feeding my soul with love. It’s all about balance and listening to what your body needs.
What’s the one item in your wardrobe that you currently can’t get enough of?
I love this long brown cardigan from Maje that I just got from David Jones. It wraps around me like a blanket. I am really loving brown and earthy colours this winter, with the occasional pop of colour and dark print.
What’s on your wish list for the Autumn/Winter 2018 season?
There’s quite a lot. As a David Jones ambassador I see all the new season pieces before they arrive in store at the Collections Launch, there’s always a long wish list that comes from that! The power suit is big this season and I have my eye on one from Rebecca Vallance. I’d also love a Bec & Bridge silk dress for layering and a Sandro trench coat. Winter dressing is my favourite season, I love the layers and bringing personality to an outfit.
You grew up in Australia, launched your modelling career in New York and are now based in LA – what makes the lifestyle in LA unique?
I really love the pace of LA, it has a lot to offer but isn’t overwhelming. LA is close to Australia and the Californian lifestyle reminds me of my hometown Perth in Western Australia.
Who are your favourite designers at the moment?
I love KitX, Ellery, Dion Lee and Jac + Jack to name a few. Living and travelling internationally, you have access to so many different brands though I find myself continuing to choose Australian designers, the quality and unique design is incredible.
How would you describe the ethos behind your skincare line Equal Beauty?
Equal Beauty is a fragrance-free line which focuses above all on hydration and protection. The skincare is suitable for everyone. Equal Beauty is the result of a long passion I have had to develop a skincare line that reflects my values and skincare needs.
What makes you feel strong?
Achieving all my goals, being true to myself and following through with all my passions. Having a strong group of women around me and being with someone that makes me feel strong and supports me.
Where in the world would you most like to travel to in 2018 and why?
Iceland. I’ve never been before and I want to sit in that Hot Spring that you see in photos!
To finish, could you share a sentiment that picks you up when you’re down?
I love to listen to music, go through old photos, looking back on all my beautiful memories with family and goals that I have accomplished. I think we forget how far we’ve come and it’s important to remind yourself of this. I feel so lucky to do what I get to do. I love my job so much and am grateful for my family and friends!
