A high-shine spin on the classic photobooth landed at Commercial Bay for two days only – and quickly became the place to be.

There’s something undeniably nostalgic about a photobooth – the curtain drawn, the countdown beginning, the flash capturing a moment in time. Over the weekend, that familiar ritual was reimagined with a high-gloss finish, as Kérastase brought its Gloss Studio pop-up to Auckland’s waterfront, inviting visitors to step inside a world of shine in celebration of its newest haircare innovation: the Gloss Absolu range, designed to deliver that glass-like finish usually reserved for a just-left-the-salon blow wave.

Tucked into the Commercial Bay Precinct Courtyard, the custom pink Kérastase installation featured a dual photobooth and a sleek vending machine moment, dispensing hero products from the range, including the Bain Crème Hydra-Glaze Shampoo, Insta Glaze Rinse-Out Conditioner, Masque Crème Hydra-Glaze and Glaze Drops.

Bathed in sunshine across the weekend, the activation drew a steady stream of visitors, with queues winding through Commercial Bay as passersby paused to see what the buzz was about. There was a palpable sense of excitement in the air, as groups of friends, families and beauty enthusiasts alike eagerly waited their turn, phones in hand before stepping behind the curtain and emerging with printed keepsakes — and, in many cases, noticeably glossier hair to match.

For some, the journey didn’t end there. Rodney Wayne salons offered the perfect next stop, where guests could continue their gloss journey, discovering how the Gloss Absolu range could be tailored to their own hair type and styling needs.

Beyond the pop-up, the moment spoke to a wider shift happening in hair. From fibre health to high-shine finish, the modern hair movement is less about fleeting trends and more about condition. The pendulum has swung from drastic cuts and bold colour changes to integrity – valuing strength and shine. Polished yet effortless is the new mood: luminous strands, resilient texture, and movement without compromise. Behind this seemingly undone finish? Science. Kérastase understands that exceptional hair starts at a structural level, with lab-led formulas designed to repair, reinforce, and future-proof the fibre. The result is hair that not only looks healthy but truly is.

Here’s the range setting the standard:

Kérastase Gloss Absolu Glaze Drops, $84.
Kérastase Gloss Absolu Frizz-Glaze Cream, $92.
Kérastase Gloss Absolu Bain Crème Hydra-Glaze Shampoo, $68, and Kérastase Insta Glaze Rinse-Out Conditioner, $84.
Kérastase Gloss Absolu Masque Crème Hydra-Glaze, $109.
Kérastase Gloss Le Parfum, $79.
