Ice cream poutine is a thing and we are super intrigued

This is a salty sweet creation that works in ways we would never have imagined.

For the uninitiated, poutine is a dish that largely consists of French fries, gravy and cheese. And before you go thinking: “sounds like a plate of cheesy chips”… think again, because this perfect trifecta of flavours is a taste bomb of epic proportions.

And now there’s a sweet spin on this traditional Canadian dish, created by none other than our own local dessert maestro, Giapo.

This ‘poutine’ is made from double deep-fried French fries, a sweet caramel ‘gravy’ and honey-infused vanilla soft serve which stand in as ‘cheese curds’ and will be a definite must-try for those among us who aren’t afraid of a flavour adventure.

On the face of it, this combo really shouldn’t work – chips and ice cream?! Really? But we’re guessing this imaginative creation will no doubt prove to be a huge hit among regular Giapo devotees, who are already familiar with his wild ice cream concoctions, as much as it will be to new visitors.

And just in case you’re not up with the ice cream state-of-play, Giapo recently moved from their long-standing Queen Street location to a gorgeous new Gore Street store in downtown Auckland.

As well as offering a classic ice cream menu (don’t worry the highly Instagrammable date night must-have ‘Two Become One’ is still available), there will also be a very special section of the menu set to feature some incredibly creative ice cream combinations such as prawn cocktail, Japanese bento box, fried pizza, arancini rice balls, and dumplings.

The man behind the incredible creations, Giapo Grazioli, noted on his blog the new space would help him and the team continue expand the “definition of ice cream”.

With this new creation now on offer, it seems like the artisanal ice cream maker is well and truly on his way!
