Start with a good base

To ensure your eye makeup stays put, and to disguise any pink or blue tones, start by applying a concealer to your lids. Next, use a natural-toned shadow over your entire eyelid area. This will be your base colour.

Line and define

To breathe new life into this much-loved look, ditch the kohl liner and opt for a sexy flick of liquid liner to create definition. If you’re feeling brave, add a subtle winged flick to the outer corner.

Build up colour

A smoky eye is traditionally linked to dark greys and blacks, but in 2014 the trend is to be more daring. There are many colours, such as plums, browns and copper tones, that can be used to create a sultry smoky look. Apply a medium tone of your chosen shade to your eyelid. Next, using a darker tone of the same shade, apply a backward C shape into your eye crease and along the upper lash line to blend the colour.

Buff, buff, buff

Using a fluffy buffing brush, or a cotton bud, buff away to blend all the tones together and remove any harsh lines. This is what gives the smoky eye its name. A final slick of mascara and you are all set.
