Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette/FX.

With the recent release of Ryan Murphy’s Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette, audiences have once again been reminded of Carolyn Bessette’s enduring style legacy. An American fashion publicist at Calvin Klein in the ’90s — and later marrying a Kennedy — Bessette quickly became a definitive trendsetter for the era.

Bessette’s wardrobe style was the epitome of ’90s minimalism: effortless black coats, white button-ups, and airy silk dresses styled with distinctive accessories such as slim sunglasses, a tortoiseshell headband, barely-there makeup and, occasionally, a swipe of red lipstick. The effect was effortless, but entirely intentional.

Following the tragic plane crash that claimed both her life and JFK Jr.’s, the couple were cemented in cultural memory. In the decades since, Bessette’s aesthetic has only grown in influence with countless fashion campaigns and brand identities (such as Sporty & Rich’s) continuing to reference her signature minimalist perfection. Her timeless, pared-back staples, immortalised through ‘90s paparazzi photography became defining images of an era and sparked a minimalist movement that still resonates.

So how does one channel Bessette’s effortless minimalism in 2026? Read on as we break down the pieces to add to your wardrobe from some of our favourite Australian and New Zealand designers.

Timeless accessories

Besette’s signature wide tortoiseshell headband and narrow oval sunglasses are arguably her most recognisable accessories. Their sleek, pared-back silhouettes framed her structured features perfectly – and remain timeless enough to translate seamlessly into today’s wardrobe.

Maggie Marilyn Forever, Better to Be Brave headband, $55.
Dissh Shevoke sunglasses, $217.

The iconic black coat

For the colder months, a timeless black coat is the most simplistic way to elevate a basic outfit. Besette wore hers over slip dresses, jeans, and light coloured dress pants. Beare Park and Harris Tapper offer perfect options for recreating the look today.

Flowy summer midi dresses

Though much is said about Besette’s winter wardrobe, her breezy summer dresses were just as compelling. Patterned midis paired with simple shoes, a classic bag and a red lip made for understated polish. Réalisation Par channels a similar ease, with thoughtfully crafted silhouettes.
