How to achieve a 10km run goal

Meet Storm Bellamy. She’s one half of Storm & India, a bespoke organic tea company that she runs with her sister, and her current fitness level is “moderate.”

Why is this important? Because, like all of us making annual New Year’s resolutions, sometimes all it takes to achieve your goal is to share it with others.

Storm has set herself a goal of smashing out a 10km run through five weeks of training and has been working with Aaron Boslem, her personal trainer at The Exercise Room, to help her stay motivated and work her way up to reaching 10km the right way.

With motivation in mind, we asked Storm to share her running regime with us. If running is something you’ve been itching to get into, but you’re daunted by the mere thought of getting started, this might just give you the kick you need…

STORM’S OBJECTIVE

“I have always been a fairly active healthy person. I know all about the benefits of regular exercise and try to make it a priority in my life. Like many others I go through periods where work, travel, socialising and poor health make it difficult to stick to a good routine and once this is broken I find it so hard to get back on track.

“After a very busy and unsettled end to 2015 I had indeed got stuck in this dreaded rut we all know. As such, I decided to set myself a goal over five weeks to run 10km. Although my fitness level is moderate, I would definitely not call myself a runner. My fitness routine for the last few months has consisted of personal training at The Exercise Room, a short run (1 or 3 km) once a week, yoga once a week and walking nearly every other day. I’m the kind of person that exercises for enjoyment, not to torture myself, so when I’m running, as soon as it starts hurting or gets boring, I stop!

“Telling family and friends about my goal, as well as enlisting the skills of my PT Aaron, has meant that I am held accountable and encouraged when trying to achieve my goal. I live out of the city so most of my runs take place at Muriwai Beach and the surrounding area, Riverhead Forest or on the treadmill at home.”

ACHIEVING THE GOAL

“My personal trainer and I have made a game plan together on what will be the best way for me to achieve this 10km goal. We have also added in a 1500m time trial each week which I am going to try and constantly improve on. I really enjoy daily walks so we have kept this in as well as my usual two gym sessions per week which we have tailored to be able to do whilst travelling or at home. As well as this I’ll be doing a lot of stretching (yoga where possible) and foam rolling to prevent injury and aid recovery.”

WORKOUT GEAR

“I think most girls can agree that pretty workout gear is motivation enough for wanting to exercise. These adidas PureBoost X shoes are not only fashionable but super comfortable making running that bit easier! As the distance I’m running increases I think I’m going to really be able to notice and appreciate the difference of the specialised fit and Boost technology.”
