Glamour and sparkle was the name of the game at this year’s Academy Awards – and former Miss USA Olivia Culpo certainly took the brief seriously, playing up her Marchesa gown with a distinctly Gatsby-like long sleek ponytail.
While a sleek side ponytail may scream pure Hollywood elegance, creating Culpo’s stunning hairstyle is actually a piece of cake, says award-winning hair stylist Jen Morgan of Auckland’s Morgan and Morgan salon.
Here’s her step-by-step guide on how to recreate this lust-worthy look:
Step 1: Firstly, Jen recommends starting with freshly washed hair. Before blowdrying with a paddle brush, add a primer such as Redken Pillow Proof Express for smooth, straight hair.
Step 2: Once hair is completely dry, you’ll need to use straightening irons to give your hair that polished look. Jen says spray hair first with Redken Iron Shape 11 Finishing Thermal Spray – the product will protect against heat, and also add shine.
Step 3: Once hair is sleek and smooth, pull it back into a low ponytail, and secure with an elastic band. Add detail by wrapping the top of the ponytail with a piece of suede or some fabric ribbon – or wrap with a small piece from the ponytail, and hold in place with a hairpin.
Step 4: Piece out the front section with a tail comb. Hold in place with Redken Quick Dry 18 Instant Finishing spray.
