Get the look: recreate the hair from FQ Runway

We caught up with hairstylist Lauren Gunn who showed us how to get the hairstyles we saw on FQ’s runway show.

If you’re looking for a new look this season then we have two for you. As recently seen on FQ’s ‘Love on the Run’ runway show, Lauren Gunn and her team of hairstylists made over 30 models runway ready. Using two looks – one a high plaited pulled back bun, and the second a wet-look wave – the team was all action backstage while they sprayed and clipped every hair perfectly into place.

For lead hair stylist and director of Colleen Lauren Gunn, adapting each style to the model was paramount to carry off each look.

“We love working with curly and coily hair types and always aim to bring out the best in these natural textures. It’s so satisfying to work with a diverse range of hair types when we are doing a show. The casting for this show was a dream from a hairstylist’s point of view,” she says.

Supported by a team of 10 stylists and five assistants, together they were able to create some awe-inspiring hairstyles. Below, we walk you through each step to recreate the FQ Runway hero hairstyles for your next event or polished off-duty look.

How to recreate the hair from the FQ Runway:

How to: the haircare products behind runway ready hair

Look 1: The braided bun

According to Gunn, minimalist hair on the runway has the ability to elevate the overall look.

“For the first look we wanted a strong silhouette that would accentuate long necks and strong jawlines as well as elongate cheekbones and spark off against the exaggerated bows, shoulders, and volume of the garments,” says Gunn.

Stylist tips:

Gunn’s team reached for the Evo Bradford Boar Bristle Brush to snatch the hair back tightly into the sleek braided bun and the Glister Digital Clip Curlers for both looks to mould the hair and put curves into all the right places.

1. Apply Moroccanoil Hydrating Styling Cream to dry hair throughout from the roots and into the mid lengths of your hair to create a sleek base for a ponytail.

2. Take a few wide sections and pump evo Haze into the roots for grip, then using a boar bristle brush snatch you hair firmly back into a ponytail at your crown.

3. Split your ponytail into 3 sections and use Glister Digital Clip Curler to create a soft curve from the base of your ponytail and sliding down the section to smooth any frizz and loosely plait these sections together into a braid.

4. Twist and wrap the braid down onto your ponytail base and pin in place, creating a cool high structured knot.

5. Capture all the wisps on your hair line with Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray Strong and mist over Color Wow Mist-ical Shine Spray for a lux shine finish.

Look 2: The wet-look wave

One of the looks which received the most tailored renditions for the runway was the sought-after wet-look style.

“The wet-look is a bit of a mashup. It hints at mermaids and sirens as well as being a suped up club look. Wet hair looks are always drop-dead cute on the runway,” says Gunn.

Stylist tips:

“We used [evo Whip it Good] to create our dewy wet look wave as well as to nourish and support the curl pattern of our curly haired models,” says Gunn.

Get the look:

1. Apply evo Whip it Good throughout your hair from roots to ends.

“Our team is obsessed with Whip it Good. This is a great multifunctional product that can be used for control, definition, anti-frizz and hydration all in one go,” says Gunn.

2. Take a low side part and spritz 2 to 3 pumps of evo Root Canal into the roots below the parting and slick this section back behind your ear.

3. Apply evo Root Canal the front 2 inches of your hairline and create some curves around your face with a wide comb.  Secure shape with flat clips in the dips of the curves and in the roots at the front to set the lift of the curve.

4. Air dry or diffuse dry.

5. Once dry take half inch vertical sections through the back and using the Glister Digital Clip Curler loosely tong the hair for a very relaxed soft wave. Tip – you can keep the clip closed while waving. Seal the ends with clips if needed.

6. Separate waves with fingers of a loose natural result.

7. Finish with lots of evo Love Touch to give a glistening ocean wave appearance.

“Love Touch Shine Spray is unbeatable for a high sheen when you want a glassy look to your hair whether it is pulled up, scraped back, or artfully tousled,” adds Gunn.

Although a fashion show is predominately about the well, fashion, the hair certainly played a starring role in this one. We can’t wait to try some of these looks at home…
