These were our stand-out picks from the Oscars red carpet

10 February 2020

It’s the night where Hollywood’s most glamorous stars pull out all the stops.

The Academy Awards is the night every movie star waits for during awards season. It’s the big one, and tension has been building now for weeks, months even. For nominees and guests, it’s the time to go all out in the style stakes and get people talking about you – preferably in a favourable way, because seriously, who doesn’t want to make the best dressed list? And for this year’s Oscars this was certainly true, with a lot of hits and only a few misses.

Sequins and embellishment were a big trend – seen on the likes of winner Renée Zellweger in Armani Privé and singer Janelle Monáe in crystal-lacquered custom Ralph Lauren – as were big sleeves and the colour red. But the main trend that recurred on the red carpet this year was sustainable fashion, with many stars re-wearing or recycling vintage red carpet gowns and suits in an effort to be more eco-friendly. Shout out to Joaquin Phoenix who has worn the same custom Stella McCartney suit all awards season and to Elizabeth Banks, who revisited the same Badgley Mischka gown she wore to her first Oscars in 2004 – and looked just as sensational, if not more so, the second time round.
