Fashion is a competitive industry, and industry politics can be exacerbated in a market as small as New Zealand’s.
But some things are bigger than all of that, as a few of the country’s top fashion designers recently discovered.
After being deeply affected by the recent death of Moko Rangitoheriri, New Zealand fashion industry heavyweights have joined forces with social change-makers Angela Bevan and Adam Bryce to launch La La La magazine – a one-off fundraising initiative for domestic abuse service provider, Shine.
Named after Moko’s favourite song by Naughty Boy & Sam Smith, La La La features a series of portraits of Kiwi kids wearing clothing from the likes of Zambesi, Kate Sylvester, Karen Walker, Nom*D, Huffer, Stolen Girlfriends Club, Eugenie, Ingrid Starnes, Wynn Hamlyn, and Paris Georgia.
Co-creator Angela Bevan notes that “while the fashion industry may seem a world away from such a significant and complex social issue as child abuse, every member of every different community has something to offer towards a solution.”
You can do your bit by picking up a copy of La La La between Saturday 11 June and Saturday 25 June at selected stores including Eugenie, Ingrid Starnes, Kate Sylvester, Zambesi and Stolen Girlfriends Club.
