Ellery’s show at Paris Fashion Week offered a moment of “self discovery”.
Kym Ellery showed her autumn winter range at Paris Fashion Week this week with the latest looks by the Australian designer signalling somewhat of a shift towards a more European aesthetic.
Ellery moved to Paris from Australia last year, settling in the chic suburb of Le Marais, home to some of the most luxurious shopping in the fashionable city.
Describing the collection’s backstory, Ellery told the Australian she’d conceived of “a traditional bourgeois woman who is coming into a moment of self-discovery, who breaks free from the conforms of society and goes on a bit of a psychedelic trip, metaphorically”.
While influences for this collection come from the setting of her new home – tailored glen check looks opened – the designer’s bohemian sensibility provided some unexpected twists and turns in the form of luxe psychedelic mid-calf dresses, sunny yellow coats, and structural PVC pieces.
Volume and texture featured strongly, with highlights including a purple Lurex coat sporting an enormous black fur collar.
Details were off-beat: oversized pearl buttons, boots with coloured Perspex heels and statement earrings that were modernist-inspired.
The show was Ellery’s fourth on the official Paris schedule.
