Owned by the fashion designer for most of the nineties, the Hamburg estate is available to purchase for €10 million.

Yes, you too can own a part of fashion history for roughly $17.15 million NZD. The Villa Jako, which was formerly owned by renowned designer Karl Lagerfeld during the nineties, has been placed on the market by its current owner.

Located in the Blankense district of Hamburg, the property was originally built in the 1920s as a replica of a Roman villa and comes complete with a facade and Roman-inspired columns. According to Women’s Wear Daily (WWD), the property was originally named Villa Schüler but under the ownership of Lagerfeld, the name was changed in memory of his partner Jacques de Bascher who died in 1989.

Visually impressive inside and out, the overall estate includes luxurious interiors and manicured gardens. Key features include gold-leaf painted ceilings, a library and a grand living room the length of the entire property. Classical glass doorways open out onto the immaculate garden and terrace with jaw-dropping views over the River Elbe.

Despite the estate not being owned by Lagerfeld since 1998, the property still bears memories of the designer’s artistic vision. The current owner has preserved some of Lagerfeld’s decor touches – according to broker Engel & Völkers – and the advertising campaign from the 1998 fragrance Jako by Lagerfeld was shot in the gardens. Lagerfeld loved the property so much he even had a book named Ein deutsches Haus published, which discussed the interiors and gardens of the property.
