Now we’d never normally discredit the benefits of checking in on your favourite websites (*cough* MissFQ.co.nz *cough*) and scrolling through the latest articles on your device of choice. But let’s keep it real, reading from physical pages and completing a real-life book really does provide unsurpassed levels of satisfaction.
They pose as time capsules of words, moments, feelings, epiphanies, lessons and perspective. Instead of opening up an app, being told which suggestions are recommended for you and passing several hours binge-watching a series that’s good, but not that good (because it requires next to no effort to do so), there’s just something so special about burying yourself in a book.
Books are chosen with deliberation and judgement. You read the blurbs to discern whether or not its the right fit for you (and whether or not the cover artwork is a deal breaker), choose the one for you, and then forfeit your device and invest your time to read a story destined to transport you to a new arena of space and time, and, hopefully, leave you feeling informed and inspired.
So, what kind of books should you be ‘investing’ in during your twenties? Well, there ought to be a good mix of classics, a spot of poetry, tales of love lost and found, and books that serve to inspire and motivate your future.
