Yesterday moochi showed its latest spring/summer collection to media and VIPs at Ostro in Britomart, Auckland. We chatted to designer Kellie Taylor about her design process and moochi’s new personal styling and shopping service.

What is the inspiration behind the new collection?
This collection has a very clean, modern and minimalist aesthetic but with subtle references to the inspiration we found in Ancient Greek iconography – such as the strong, column-esque architectural lines of styles like the ‘column pant’ and soft, feminine draping.

What influences your design process?
With so much information at our fingertips today, now (more than ever) we find that inspiration can come from anywhere! We try to look outside and within when designing, observing trends from a global perspective, seeing what is working and what people really want to wear.

What are some of the defining features of the new collection?
This collection is very much characterised by the finer details – from the signature ‘xx’ printed silk to the embroidered mesh cut outs and leather panelling. It’s these details that elevate our COLLECTION label from your everyday to something more indulgent and luxurious.

Are there any recurring staples in the collection?
The ‘kiss tee’ will be a hardworking piece in any wardrobe. It’s a versatile silk crepe de chine tee in a printed black silk – the perfect piece to mix and match with either tonal neutrals or rich colour this spring/summer. Or, as a style that will stay with you for years to come, the new bone white leather ‘jacksonville jacket’ will be an investment piece that will stand the test of time. Handmade in limited numbers, this is a beautiful, soft and drapey leather jacket with an asymmetrical front and half peplum back.

Which is your favourite item?
The fret dress is a stand out piece. The structure of this dress together with volume of the fabric have resulted in a dress with a beautifully strong sillouette – the wide sleeves balance the look to create a modern shape that is both flattering and chic.

What’s next for Moochi?
We have just launched a new personal styling and shopping service with our moochi insider and styling expert Ayla Surtees (former Newmarket store manager). Whether you’re looking for a miracle worker to guide you through a full wardrobe re-style, want to be the first to know about upcoming collections or you simply have an outfit emergency that requires immediate action (and same-day delivery), this new service may be just what you need to make your wardrobe work as hard as you do.
