Heading to the races this weekend? We asked Melbourne It girl and Auckland Cup Day Prix de Fashion judge Rebecca Stoneman her best fashion tips for the races.

As a former Myer fashions on the field ambassador, Stoneman who is also heavily involved in the Australian equestrian scene herself (she and her husband recently opened ‘Stoneman Equine,’ a boutique horse training facility in Melbourne which specialises in retraining retired racehorses), she knows a thing or two about dressing the part, a la equestrian chic:

FQ: What are your go-to essentials for the races?
Rebecca Stoneman: Millinery is a must, it’s not everyday that you get to wear gorgeous millinery! Bandaids, bobby pins and of course the form guide!

Who is your races style inspiration?
Myer ambassador Jodi Anasta and Francesca Cumani because they both have timeless and effortless style, always looking the part trackside.

What are your races fashion no-go’s?
Sequins, mini skirts or anything you would wear to a nightclub. Keep it classy ladies, it’s all about elegance at the races.

What would your advice be for hats and headwear?
My advice is balance. If the dress is your statement piece, keep the millinery more simple. Make sure the millinery suits the shape of your face while still having fun with a bold creation.

What would your advice be to those who wanting to catch the eye of the Prix de Fashion judges?
Make sure you are wearing an outfit that you are comfortable and confident in as you will shine on the catwalk. Style, originality and interpreting key racewear trends is also still important.

Why is the races one of your favourite events of the year?
The Melbourne Cup Carnival combines all of my loves; racing, fashion and socialising. It’s an event that’s in all Australians and New Zealander’s calendars and one that shouldn’t be missed each October and November.

What is your favourite look you have worn to the races previously?
My favourite look would definitely be an outfit that I wore for the final of Myer Fashions on the Field in 2013 when I was the competition ambassador. The outfit was a gorgeous white textured Manning Cartell dress that went below the knee, complemented by a pink Melissa Jackson headpiece. It was just divine.

What are some of your favourite looks you’ve seen on others at the races in Melbourne or elsewhere?
There’s too many stand out outfits to name favourites! The Myer Fashions on the Field contestants never cease to amaze me with the level of detail and expense they go to to impress the judges. It makes judging the competition extremely difficult.

What are you favorite places to shop in Melbourne?
Myer. It’s a one stop shop for the best Australian designers and latest fashion trends.
