In this new interview series the Simply You team reveal some of their favourite fashion moments, from their first major fashion purchase to their career highlights.
Here, we sit down with Simply You fashion editor Louise Hilsz.
When do you realise that you wanted a career in fashion?
For as long as I can remember I’ve been favouring statement eyewear. Even when I was four I was very particular about style and colour.
How and when did you get your big break?
When I closed my retail store in Newmarket, Winks Boutique, Kevin and Shirley Berkahn introduced me to the editor at the time Natalie Bridges. She offered me a 6 week assistant role – the rest is history.
What was your first major fashion purchase?
A Dolce & Gabbana silver bomber jacket.
When did you start at Simply You?
2009.
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
Meeting Heidi Klum (for the first time) was pretty exciting and my first overseas fashion shoot in Florence in 2010. It was my first time being in Europe and still to this day, it is one of my most favourite cities in the world.
What advice would you give to people trying to get into the industry?
Don’t take any opportunity for granted. If you get the chance to do work experience or an intern role, come with a good attitude and be prepared to start at the bottom doing the not-so-fun jobs – your hard work and persistence will pay off!
