In this continuing interview series, the Simply You team reveal their first major fashion purchase, how they got their big break and career highlights.
Here, we sit down with Simply You beauty editor Elise Wilson.
When did you first realise that you wanted a career in the magazine industry?
I was first exposed to the glamour and fast-paced magazine environment when I landed a job on reception at an international magazine publishing company in Auckland when I was 19.
How and when did you get your big break?
After working for a year on reception, I got promoted to editorial/fashion & beauty assistant at New Idea magazine. It was the most exciting time and I’d worked so hard to prove that I deserved that chance. The rest is history!
What was your first major fashion purchase?
I don’t make big fashion splurges very often – I’m such a bargain hunter! However, I did recently splurge on my amazing Deadly Ponies Mr Gator Gang bag, $870 and matching Mr Wallet, $315. They are my pride and joy!
When did you start at Simply You?
I started in January this year.
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
There have been so many! I’d say that getting my dream job at Simply You magazine would be up there as the best, followed closely by interviewing Hollywood actress Olivia Wilde to find out all of her health and beauty secrets.
What advice would you give to people trying to get into the industry?
Hard work and determination pays off! Don’t be afraid to be persistent and ALWAYS be the ‘yes’ person.
