Sun-kissed shoulders, strappy tops, and linen staples — there’s much to love about spring/summer dressing. While we can show as much skin as we like during the weekends, when Monday inevitably rolls around, we must once again face the dilemma of finding an outfit that’s both office-appropriate and breathable. The last thing you want is to be sitting at your desk in a suit feeling sweaty and flustered, and sometimes no amount of air-con can combat the problem. Fortunately, there are a number of practical yet professional pieces that you can invest in. Be it a lightweight linen dress or a smart tailored twinset, the following FQ-approved staples will be sure to get you out of your sartorial rut.

10 Non-negotiable workwear items

1. Simple shirting

Whether or not you work in a corporate environment, a chic shirt should be the foundation of every work wardrobe. While a tailored silhouette will never go amiss, when it’s warm, consider opting for a less structured style that will allow for ample breathing room. Fabric composition is equally important. Who wants to be feeling sticky in synthetic shirting? Not us. Reach for pieces made entirely out of natural fibres and you’ll not only feed good but they’ll stand the test of time in your wardrobe. Brands such as Maggie Marilyn, COS, and Assembly Label are a great starting point, offering an abundance of silhouettes, textures, and prints to suit every budget and preference.

2. One bag fits all

Few bags are as perennially stylish and versatile as the carryall, and this is particularly true during warmer months when the idea of a post-work swim becomes more enticing. Boasting a capacious interior with enough room for your work essentials and your beach gear — they’re a no-brainer investment. On our current wish list? Deadly Ponies ‘Mr Breton’ tote in black.

3. Twin tailoring

We love wearing a matching set to the office, but in summer, a heavy suit is the last thing you’ll want to reach for. Thankfully, there are plenty of stylish tailored vests on the market with equally stylish Bermuda shorts to pair with them. Not only do they take the guesswork out of getting dressed but they’re polished enough for most professional settings. Any sets made from rayon, cotton, or linen will be your best bet for beating the heat.

4. A fashionable flat

It’s time to put your favourite boots in storage, because you won’t be needing them any time soon. For a shoe style that’s trendy and professional, consider investing in a highquality pair of ballet flats or Mary Janes — both firm favourites amongst the FQ team. These styles allow your feet to breathe while still adhering to professional standards. The best part of all? You can pair them with socks or stockings in winter so that they’re fully trans-seasonal.

5. Timeless trouser

Striking the perfect balance between relaxed and dressy, a good pair of trousers can do no wrong. Whether you prefer a classic pleated style or something a bit more contemporary and cool, there’s a number of brands offering lightweight silk, cotton, and linen variations that’ll slip seamlessly into your summer work wardrobe. Simply pair them with a shirt or boxy tee of your choice, and you’re in business.

6. Throw-on dress

We love anything that we can throw on with ease in the mornings — which is why we often end up reaching for a reliable dress. Though they can sometimes be tricky to navigate in the workplace (depending on the length of the hem or style of neckline), we’re extremely partial to a high-neck A-line dress. Try a shirred, shift, or button-down silhouette for an outfit that’s equal parts sophisticated and stylish.

7. Sleek skirt

You’ll probably need to forgo miniskirts in the office, but that doesn’t mean you need to stay away from skirts altogether. Carefree and cool, a lightweight cotton, silk, or linen midi skirt provides a fashionable foundation for any work outfit — pairing well with shirts, tees, and even your favourite summer blazer. If your office dress code is more relaxed, a denim midi skirt is also a versatile option that can transition easily into the cooler months when paired with stockings.

8. Sharpen up

On those days where you want an extra layer, don’t shy away from a classic blazer. Providing an elegant touch to any outfit, throw them on over dresses or shirts when the office air-con is feeling a tad chilly. Just be sure to check the fabric tag and stick to natural light fibres like cotton or linen when making your selection.

9. Trusty tee

They might not be formal enough for every office, but a simple cotton tee is a steadfast staple in many work wardrobes. Proving particularly versatile in the summer months, a high-quality tee will last for years in your wardrobe and can be dressed up with trousers or a well-cut skirt. Brands such as Rebe, Assembly Label, and Maggie Marilyn offer a range of chic cotton tees for under $150 that you can keep going back to.

10. Time to shine

No work wardrobe is complete without a few statement accessories, which can help to bring a touch of flair and personality to your ensembles. This is particularly important when you’re wearing fewer layers, as the little details can make a greater impact. Whether it’s a stack of rings, a bold pair of earrings, or a timeless watch — adding a few simple touches can take your outfit from good to great.
