Maria Grazia Chiuri unveiled a celebration of Spanish culture this week as Plaza de España in the city of Seville served as the mesmerising backdrop to Dior’s Resort 2023 collection.
Why Seville? Dior creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri revealed it was Spanish flamenco dancer Carmen Amaya, known for rewriting the rules of dance and rejecting gendered dressing, who served as inspiration for much of the collection.
“The emblem of #DiorCruise 2023 is the legendary flamenco dancer Carmen Amaya, known as La Capitana,” Chiuri shared on Instagram days prior to the show. “She is the symbol of this collection and brings us back to the realities of flamenco with her performing that does not submit to any canons.”
Naturally, there were flowing, floor-grazing gowns with frills, ruffles and lace aplenty and decolletage-flattering off-the-shoulder cuts. Juxtaposed with the collection’s ultra-feminine silhouettes were masculine tailoring and matador-esque ensembles, including men’s sombreros made by local artisans. Amaya, Chiuri’s muse, was, after all, one of the first dancers to embrace and wear attire traditionally worn by men.
