A day and night in the life of Miss FQ’s digital associate editor Skye Ross

Miss FQ digital and associate editor Skye Ross reveals the details of her ideal day…and night.

Is that my alarm going off? Ugh. Snooze. Mornings ain’t my thang and no matter how many interviews with successful #boss women I read, an early bird I am not… although I have just started exercising regularly – much to the surprise of my boyfriend and BFFS – so never say never, girl!

Eventually I roll out of bed to the sound Drake and Kendrick Lamar’s hip-hop bangers rapping through the house. I spend the next 10 mins dreaming up my day’s outfit while I belt out “Be humble. Sit down. Be humble” in the shower.

Still unsure of what my ensemble will be, I reach for my Bonds Hipster Triangle Crop in Bloom, $22.99, and Hipster Boyleg in Daintree, $15.99, to wear while I scroll Pinterest for outfit inspiration. I’ve long been a Bonds loyalist (srsly we’re talking pre-puberty) because they’re so freakin’ cute and comfy. I’m a firm believer in wearing underwear your way, even if you’re the only person who’s going to see it. Plus I love feeling like I’m rockin’ a party underneath while appearing business-like on top. You know the feeling.

My overt obsession with ‘effortless’ is even more apparent when it comes to workday makeup, partly due to my aforementioned inability to feel wide awake until 9am, but mainly down to my lengthy skincare routine which consists of no less than seven steps and just as many cremes, potions and lotions. My battle with acne is well documented; I’d rather invest time in feeling confident with my true, natural self than spend it covering and concealing.

Works begins with many emails, mainly responding to PR pitches, helping to create campaigns for clients, and firing off questions to inspirational girlbosses for our regular Q&A series online. I spend some time briefing in our writer and interns on the day’s stories for MissFQ.co.nz; they’ll be focusing on news while I work on a lengthier beauty article and an opinion piece in between partnership meetings, catch ups about our digital strategy and a beauty WIP to learn about one of my favourite brands’ new launch. My phone, like every other millennial, is glued to my hand so I can Instagram Story all the amazing packages that come across my desk and respond to emails while I duck in and out of boardrooms.

My calendar reminder dings for what feels like the millionth time today, but thankfully this notification is my last and often ends up being the most fun. Many nights of the week are busy with events for work, from beauty launches to fashion shows. I’m all for taking my outfit from day to night if I can, but lately I’ve loved dressing up for parties like the Best in Beauty Awards and Moet Party Day. Did someone say champagne? Oh, I won’t say no!

A swift change into my Bonds Hipster Tee Bra, $36.99 and Hipster Microfibre Bikini, $16.99, both in Feline Fine have got me feeling evening-appropriate and are the perfect accompaniment to my Bec & Bridge Liquid Envy Bias Dress dress which always look great in a ‘gram.

After mixing and mingling, saying hi to all the right people, and getting that oh-so necessary photo for social media, it’s time to head home. Normally I’ve managed to nibble on canapes, but if I’ve been networking too much to eat, I’ll order pizza when I’m in my uber and time it perfectly for when I arrive home. It’s a skill, okay?!

Finally, I throw on my PJs, and watch an episode of Masterchef in bed (because I’m not-so-secretly obsessed) before hitting my favourite SLIP silk pillowcases which help to maintain that coveted blow wave curl and keep the appearance of wrinkles at bay. Okay, so wrinkles aren’t a concern I have yet, but I’m all for prevention RN. My boyfriend, Mark and I debrief about our busy days – he also works in media so understands what it’s like – and talk dreams and travel plans, then it’s alarm on, lights out, another day done and dusted.
