The next must-have accessory, the sleek Apple Watch, will not only keep “unfailingly accurate time”, it’ll help you in your fitness routines, allow you to make and receive calls and even play music.

Apple chief executive Tim Cook unveiled the company’s first new product since the iPad, launched in 2010, with the help of veteran supermodel Christy Turlington Burns at an event in San Francisco this week. “I found the watch to be such a useful running companion, to have such data and information at my fingertips,” Turlington Burns said. She test drove the Apple Watch in the Kilamanjaro Half Marathon in Tanzania recently and is now using it to train for the Virgin Money London Marathon.

While the watch offers a wide range of apps, most people will use it for communication. Users will be able to make and receive calls and texts, as well as send their own animated emojis. Most importantly – Christy gives the watch, available in more than a dozen styles from April 24 in the US, the style tick of approval. “It’s so chic, honestly,” she said.

But Kiwis keen to snap up one of the smart watches will have to wait – the company wasn’t able to give a date when it will be available in New Zealand.
