Has the anti-luxury trend reached an all-time high?
Céline’s Spring/Summer 2018 ready-to-wear show saw models walk down the runway in sharp tailored suiting and clutching – you will never guess – a custom Céline plastic bag.
While you’d be forgiven for thinking this was just another runway styling prop, Céline fans will be pleased to know this handbag design will be available to purchase before Phoebe Philo leaves Céline and Hedi Slimane takes over the helm later this year.
According to Hypebae, the Céline bag comes as a set with the brand’s leather clutch or coin purse. Retailing for approximately $985 USD ($1,346 NZD), it will be available in Céline stores in the next couple of months. So sorry New Zealand Céline fans – you will have to go overseas to purchase one.
Guaranteed that before long we’ll start to see the Céline plastic bag pop up on the arm of influencers everywhere, with several spotted clutching potential said bag outside the Céline SS18 show.
Anti-luxury handbags have become a major fashion trend in recent years, with designers creating low-key, everyday designs at a luxury price point. Popular styles include the French-inspired net bag, supermarket totes, satchels and bum bags. Think tourist, market day or running errand chic at its finest.
Vetements granny bag, $4,600, from Matches Fashion; Opening Ceremony tote bag, $51; 3.1 Phillip Lim Accordian tote, $669, from Farfetch; Miu Miu leather belt bag, $1,403, from Net-a-porter.
Other designs to have adopted the plastic bag trend include the Comme des Garçons plastic covered paper shopper which debuted in 2015, and Raf Simons’ PVC shopping bag.
Ultimately it appears that designers are choosing to invest in this non-luxury handbag style with goods like the Céline plastic bag destined as a collectible item amongst super fans and the fashion elite.
