With winter feeling like it’s finally in full swing, your winter woollies and cashmere pieces will be getting more wear than ever.
We asked Elle Pugh and Yolande Ellis, the mother-daughter duo behind the ELLE + RILEY knitwear brand, to give their tips for keeping your cashmere pieces in the best possible condition, so you can wear them season after season.
Tip #1: It’s best not to wear the same piece of cashmere two days running. Ensure you get more life out of your pieces by rotating your knitwear wardrobe as much as possible.
Tip #2: Air and freshen up your cashmere between wears with a cashmere deodoriser spray. You also can’t beat fresh air and sunshine so pick a sunny day to air your knitwear outside.
Tip #3: Keep on top of the inevitable pilling. Small knots may appear on your cashmere especially in areas of high friction. This is not a sign of cheap or poor quality knitwear, this is called pilling. Gently remove these knots with a cashmere comb.
Tip #4: Wash your cashmere (inside out) in cold water using a natural cashmere wash. Gently squeeze the suds through the fabric, taking care not to rub, wring or stretch your garment. Roll in a towel, squeezing out any excess water, and lay flat on a dry towel away from direct sunlight to dry. Shop: Elle & Riley Cashmere Wash, $35
Tip #5: Don’t iron your cashmere. If you find it is wrinkled, gently steam it, but be careful not to over-steam as this may cause it to fluff.
Tip #6: Ensure your cashmere is clean before popping back in your closet. Remember moths love dirt, perspiration and perfume. Keep your cashmere folded in a breathable, sealed cotton bag along with cedar blocks to help repel moths.
Like a fine wine, if you care for your cashmere properly it will improve with age. Show your cashmere some love and it will last a lifetime.
