Today’s surprise Instagram reveal by Beyoncé that’s she’s expecting twins has sent the internet into a frenzy.

The singer announced the news she was expecting twins earlier today on Instagram, sharing a picture of her holding her baby bump surrounded by flowers. The sweet caption read: “We would like to share our love and happiness. We have been blessed two times over. We are incredibly grateful that our family will be growing by two, and we thank you for your well wishes – The Carters.”

Within minutes, ‘twins’ became the top trending topic on Twitter, with the social media platform reporting that Bey’s upcoming announcement #twins saw as many as half a million tweets sent by its users within 45 minutes. At the topic’s peak, a staggering 17,000 tweets were sent a minute.

The top Twitter trending topic “twins” has closely been followed by “Beyonce,” “Blue” and “Beyhive” and it’s clear from the humour in the tweets that the news comes as a respite from the ongoing US presidential news.

The singer is no stranger to taking fans by surprise. She famously announced her first pregnancy on stage at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards by opening her jacket and stroking her belly.

There’s no news yet as to when the babies are due.
