We’re so hoppy about this!
If you’re anything like us, winter-time is bath time and we’re all for making this ritual as indulgent as possible.
When it comes to creating the best soak, we’ve pretty much tried it all. From fizzing rose-scented bath bombs, to milk and champagne (yes, we know the latter might seem a bit wasteful, but hey!). And now we can add beer as a new way to get the best from a bath – and we don’t mean drinking it either.
Bathing in beer is not such a new concept. Apparently, beer-soaks have been around for centuries in places like the Czech Republic, where enjoying a relaxing beer-filled bath comes with added beauty benefits. While we’ve known that rinsing your hair with beer at the end of a shampoo can add shine, we didn’t know the ancient tradition of beer bathing was recognised as a skin fix-all.
Joshua Zeichner, MD, director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at Mt. Sinai Hospital told Yahoo Beauty beer soaks can treat a range of skin problems, from anti-aging to eczema.
“The flavour of beer is enhanced by adding hops to the brew. Hops are potent antioxidants, and as such help reduce inflammation,” explains Zeichner. “Beer also contains brewer’s yeast, which is rich in B-complex vitamins, which have skin soothing and brightening effects.”
The therapeutic beer-bathing trend is starting to take off overseas too, with reports of a brand new “beer spa resort” that offers heated beer-spas set to open later this year.
America’s capital of alternative cool, Oregon, already has its own craft beer spa, Hop in the Spa, which opened last year.
Relaxing in beer… perhaps while having a relaxing beer. Sounds perfect to us!
