If you’re off on holiday, you’ll want to maximise your suitcase space to pick up souvenirs (*ahem* more beauty products) along the way. Here’s how.
While it’s hard enough squeezing everything into your suitcase, your carry-on bag is where you can really get into trouble, especially if you’re a beauty junkie like us. With liquid regulations, you can’t exactly just pack your entire beauty regime as is.
That’s where this handy guide comes in, to help you keep your beauty essentials plane-friendly as well as save space in your suitcase.
Tip #1: Swap liquid for solid
In case you hadn’t noticed, solid beauty products are having a moment – regardless of their travel-friendly potential. Thanks to the green beauty movement happening right now, many brands are releasing solid versions of everything, from fragrance to shampoo and sunscreen to cleanser, there is pretty much no limit to what you can find in a solid-state.
Solid products are particularly handy for travel because there is no risk of spillage or breakage on long-haul flights, unlike liquid. It’s a total win-win.

If you just can’t live without fragrance on holiday, solid scents should be your go-to.

Tip #2: Trade aerosol for powder
It can be hard to forgo your usual aerosol products in your carry-on, such as dry shampoo, but a great plane-friendly alternative is powders. Not only do powder formulas usually come in smaller sizes but they also last longer – meaning you don’t have to worry about running out of something on your trip.

Tip #3: Stock up on samples
You know all those beauty samples you collect in a draw and save for a rainy day? Well now is your time to use them. Particularly useful on a flight, samples of moisturiser, eye cream and face masks will prove life-saving when you only need one application of a product. At most stores you should be able to ask for a sample of something you have your eye on –and what better time to try it!
Tip #4: Invest in travel minis
Not only are mini beauty products the cutest things on earth (have you seen a mini lipstick?) they are absolutely essential for travel. Avoid any bulky packaging and invest in travel minis of your favourite products to see you through your holiday – minis don’t have to be expensive either, there are some really affordable options out there.

Tip #5: Bring multi-use products

One trick we love doing is packing a bronzer and using it both on the eyelids and cheeks – it makes a great eye shadow as well as giving warmth to skin.
A multi-purpose balm such as the Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream Skin Protectant, $37, works for so many beauty qualms such as dry lips and cuticles, and can even be used as an eyebrow gel or on top of eyeshadow as Kourtney Kardashian does to get a glossy lid effect.
Another cult beauty buy is Weleda Skin Food, an all-natural nourishing moisturiser which can be used as an ultra-hydrating hand cream, face cream and body cream on the go. The good news is the brand has just come out with a lighter version for those who prefer their moisturiser to be on the lighter side.
Tip #6: Opt for single-serve skincare
We know the importance of caring for your skin during long haul flights, but how realistic is it to lug your entire skincare routine with you on the flight? Enter single serve skincare. The idea behind single serve skincare is that everything is pre-packaged into plane-friendly sizes, and you can take away the exact amount you need. Examples are sheet masks and capsule serums which take up next to no room, and there is absolutely no risk of spillage.
Tip #7: Get decanting
