Run out of shampoo or need a quick DIY face mask? You’ll be surprised at how versatile food can be.
Avocado
Mashed with red onion, tomato, and a squeeze of lemon, avocados are pretty good, but they are even better massaged onto clean skin and used as a hydrating face mask.
Turmeric
Made into a paste with a little lime juice, turmeric can be used to lighten acne scarring. Apply to discoloured areas and leave for 20 minutes before rinsing off.
Egg
Egg mixed with lemon juice and a bit of oil makes a great makeshift shampoo, or whisk egg whites and use as a tightening mask.
Honey
Known for its antiseptic qualities, honey can be dabbed on blemishes to help speed recovery.
Apple cider vinegar
Mixed with a little water, apple cider vinegar is an excellent alternative to toner. Soak a cotton pad and apply to the face after cleansing.
Coffee
Mix warm coffee grounds with oil and massage onto legs for an at-home cellulite treatment.
Berries
For an anti-ageing mask, mash berries with a spoonful of honey, paint on the face and leave for 20 minutes.
Chamomile tea
Brew two chamomile tea bags in boiling water for five minutes, pop in the fridge to cool, and place one on each eye to combat puffiness and dark circles.
Yoghurt
Make a natural facial scrub out of yoghurt and oats to exfoliate away dead skin cells.
Red wine
Dab a little red wine on the apples of your cheeks when you’re out of blush.
