Simply You editor Naomi Larkin asks two locals for their favourite spots in Johannesburg to bring you this insider’s guide.
Freelance journalist Thomo Setshogo (pictured left) and freelance producer and stylist with Studio Toselli Leigh Toselli (pictured right) know their city inside out.
Restaurants/Cafes to try:
Thomo Setshogo: Brian Lara Rum Eatery, named after the cricketer, (pictured) is relaxed and unpretentious and serves great Jamaican food.
Leigh Toselli: King Arabic Sandwiches, Mayfair, has authentic shawarmas, lovely hibiscus tea – best to go on the weekend.
Best places to shop:
Thomo Setshogo: The Space in Rosebank (pictured) for homeware and fashion, much of it made locally. @home stores for decor.
Leigh Toselli: Bryanston Organic Market for fresh veges. Thats it! I love their curated selection of fashion labels. Authur Bales for fabric and haberdashery.
Favourite hidden gem:
Thomo Setshogo: Sunninghill’s Meat Lounge (pictured) offers a traditional Shisha nyama (barbecue and meat) experience. Best on Sunday afternoon.
Leigh Toselli: The Piston Ring – a monthly vintage car meet, petrol head fix, but the highlight is the collectables and swap section.
Where to Stay:
Thomo Setshogo: The Parkwood Boutique Hotel, it’s close to good restaurants and shopping.
Leigh Toselli: The Saxon Hotel, Villas and Spa.
Getting there:
Qantas operates frequent flights from Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch to Johannesburg via Sydney.
