Ashley Olsen says heels are over, here’s why

23 May 2016

Flats have always been a staple for Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen - both on and off the runway.

The return of the humble Birkenstock to mainstream fashion (and no doubt, your Instagram feed) over the past couple of years is a true sign that flats are back in style.

Gone are the days where a night out means having to rock a six inch stiletto, with the rise of athleisure we’ve become far more concerned with being comfortable, but still not at the expense of looking good. Which is where flats come in.

Flats have always been a runway staple for Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s label, The Row, and it’s a look that the sisters have become known for themselves – wearing everything from clog-like Birkenstock Amsterdams, to slip-on sneakers, leather slides and ballet flats (Chanel, natch), no matter the occasion.

Speaking to Footwear News recently, Ashley explained that the proof is in the pudding when it comes to current buyer behaviour. “It’s interesting talking to [buyers],” she told the website.  “They say that in the past several years, business has shifted to 70 percent flats.”

As for whether The Row will stay with their footwear aesthetic, Ashley says they will – for now at least.  “[For now] it felt right to stay in the more grounded, everyday spirit of the ready-to-wear and build off the evening-slipper idea.”
