There’s a new Moschino-clad Barbie in town – and already she is making history.
Not only did this collector’s edition doll sell out in less than an hour, but Moschino Barbie’s brand new ad stars a young boy for the first time in the doll’s 56-year history.
“Moschino Barbie is so fierce,” says the mohawked young boy, while styling his doll with a miniature quilted shopper to complement her leather two-piece (modelled on Moschino’s AW14 collection, of course).
It is a move that has received praise from both industry insiders and the general public for breaking down stereotypes around gender specific toys. RuPaul’s Drag Race star Pandora Boxx commented on the Moschino Barbie YouTube video: “This almost made me cry! I used to play with my sister’s Barbies and felt such shame afterward. I’m so glad we can just let kids be kids. Thank you for this! Boys like dolls too!”
Moschino creative director, Jeremy Scott, has long been a fan of Barbie, telling Style.com she has been a muse to him during his design career: “Like every girl and gay boy, I loved Barbie.”
If you are hoping to get your hands on one of the new Barbie dolls, sadly you’re out of luck. The $230 collector’s edition debuted on November 9, but sold out in less than an hour.
