There is nothing worse than less than perfect-looking feet in sexy summer sandals. Trudi Brewer meets Hanan Rad from Perform Podiatry to get the lowdown on foot care:

What is a podiatrist?
Podiatry or podiatric medicine is a branch of medicine devoted to the study of disorders of the ankle and the foot. In New Zealand, in order to practise as a podiatrist, you must have completed a Bachelor of Health Science, specialising in podiatry, and you must be registered.

What makes Perform Podiatry stand out from the crowd?
We provide expert services to people of all ages and stages with no referral needed. We treat lower limb conditions, calluses, bunions, yellow nails and everything in between. Our services fall into five simple categories; treating skin and nail problems, injury management, condition management (diabetes and arthritis), children’s foot problems, foot orthotics and footwear therapy. We are also qualified to perform nail surgeries. We understand the busy lives of our clients and offer a 24/7 online booking service. With easy access and allocated parking, our practice is based in the heart of Auckland, between Remuera and Newmarket in the One Health Medical Building.

As director of the clinic, what is your background?
I have a Bachelor of Health Science, specialising in podiatry and have partaken in many post-graduate courses in the sport medicine field. I have particular expertise in pain management. My goal is to reduce or eliminate pain in the short and long term using different techniques such as myofascial release therapy, trigger point therapy, myofascial dry needling, exercise and orthotic prescription.

Why is it so important to look after our feet?
On average, a person walks 10,000 steps a day. Even though our feet account for 25 per cent of the bones in the body, they are often the most neglected parts of our body. We willingly spend hundreds of dollars on hair styling, skincare and make-up but what about our poor feet? They rarely see the light of day except during summer when we wear open-toe shoes – yet they bear the brunt of the daily grind.

What is a medical pedicure?
A medical pedicure focuses on the hygienic and aesthetic care of feet. This service is offered in a private, safe and relaxing space. After 45 minutes, your problem feet will have magically transformed into such beautiful masterpieces you’ll be afraid to walk on them.

Why medical pedicures vs. traditional spa pedicures?
A medical pedicure is a dry pedicure, meaning there are no unhygienic footbaths that can cause bacterial and fungal infections due to cross-contamination. We understand the anatomy and pathology of the skin and nails and are experts in foot care. We adhere to the highest levels of sanitation to combat the threat of germs; all instruments are sterilised in an autoclave, adhering to strict protocols by the Podiatry Board of New Zealand.
