Her whimsical designs look beautiful on the page so it’s hardly surprising that they look good in fondant, too.

Clare Grove, author/illustrator of the FQ-approved My Mummy Loves picture book series, drew upon her unwavering love of fashion when it came to her most recent creative pursuit—the Art of Cake 2015 competition.

Held at Shore City in Takapuna, Art of Cake 2015 asked local fashion identities (including, in addition to Clare, stylist Kylie Cooke and the boys behind Four Eyes blog) to produce mood boards for cake concepts, after which local cakers were invited to submit cake designs based on these mood boards.

Envisioned by the multi-talented mama and realised by Sweet Bites Cakes, Clare’s ‘Oriental Gardens Cake’ explores the correlation between modern drapery, delicate fabrics and iconic Japanese culture. Clare took inspiration from the intricacy of Oriental style, and from the couture gowns of Chanel and Dior, before handing over to the team at Sweet Bites who produced a multi-tiered masterpiece adorned with traditional oriental fans and florals.

The cakes were unveiled at Shore City on August 6 where they will remain on display until the winner is announced on August 27. Winners are decided by public vote – all you have to do is spend $5 at Shore City before August 27 and you will receive a vote token.

Whatever the outcome, we think a new addition to the series – My Mummy Loves Cakes – would look great on our bookshelf.
