Halloween, but make it fashion: 21 spooky-chic items for your home and wardrobe

And not one of them involving a costume.

Halloween isn’t particularly relevant in Aotearoa for those who have graduated past primary school. But it is an occasion. And like any other occasion, we won’t pass the opportunity to put on a festive spread or pull something playful from our wardrobes.

Subtle Halloween Style

True to FQ form, our take on the “spooky” holiday demands sophistication, giving us permission to wear glamorous gowns that have been gathering dust—or cobwebs, rather. Sleek black satin dresses, velvet blazers, and accessories that hint at the mysterious—like gothic-inspired jewellery or a haunting deep-red lip. Or, at the very least, step out in orange hues befitting of a pumpkin patch.

The Halloween Tablescape

Forget disposable props and Halloween paraphernalia, you can achieve a perfectly chic, adequately spooky tablescape with pieces within arms reach all year round. Opt for dark-toned tableware, such as matte black plates, candelabras and objects with metallic accents, and smoky glassware to set an atmosphere that feels both haunting and elegant. Incorporating autumnal accents like miniature pumpkins, deep florals, and dark, rich fabrics like velvet runners or napkins will add a luxurious touch. Add for the cherry on top? An intoxicating scent with notes of cinnamon, clove, musk, and maple.
