Suede season has officially hit the northern hemisphere, putting us here in New Zealand in a bit of a sartorial dilemma. Jackets are, without a doubt, a cornerstone of any autumn/winter wardrobe, but as we head into warmer months, the necessity of one starts to feel less pressing. And yet – there’s something undeniably appealing about a brown suede jacket.
Maybe it’s the effortless cool-girl chic that comes with it, or perhaps it’s the constant appearances on my Instagram feed, draped over the shoulders of off-duty models like Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid/style influencers en masse. Whatever the reason, whether it’s a classic suede blazer or a relaxed bomber style, I find myself rationalising how perfect it is for spring.
Here’s why: even on the hottest summer days, there’s often a chill in the air come evening, and a suede jacket is the ideal piece to throw over a light, floaty, or floral dress, adding some serious style clout. And let’s not forget—it’s an investment. Suede, by nature, is a luxe material, and though it might sit on the pricier side, it’s the kind of wardrobe staple you’ll have for years to come.
While brands like Zara and COS offer some great (and more affordable) options, don’t discard vintage stores. Brown suede jackets were a defining look of the ’70s, so it’s likely you’ll find something with authentic, pre-loved charm. That’s where I’ll be heading—stat.
